Love Learn Serve

Year One

Transition from the early Years Foundation Stage to Year One is a process, not an event – we aim for the children to gradually move away from a play based curriculum. We still give opportunities for choosing time and free play, especially at the beginning of the year.

The children choose some of their activities for the morning and also have some time for free play in the afternoons; they also complete more focused directed activities in English and maths daily and take part in a guided reading session and phonics lesson every day.

Other subjects are taught through a theme where possible, although some subjects do not fit in with the theme and so are taught separately.

Homework is sent out on Fridays, this alternates between Maths and Topic and is due in for the following Wednesday.  Children also have weekly spellings to practise at home for a spelling test on Friday. We also expect children to spend time reading every day at home.
