We follow the curriculum as set out by the government covering three Prime areas of learning: Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), Communication and Language (CL) and Physical Development (PD), and the Specific areas of learning: Literacy (L), Mathematics (M), Understanding the World (UW) and Expressive Arts & Design (EAD). All areas of learning are important at this stage and the planning and activities are based around this. In Reception we learn through play, creating fun activities in which children learn new skills in an enjoyable environment. We teach through a mixture of teacher led carpet sessions, adult led activities and child led play. We aim to cover a range of topics and these can iEYFS (Reception) Long Term Overview 2026 27nclude: 'All About Me', 'Come and Celebrate', Off on an Adventure’, 'Beanstalks & Butterflies' and ‘Where in the World?’. However we also plan around children's interests, a recent short topic we used was Space!
USEFUL INFORMATION
P.E. -Our PE days are currently on a Monday with Montagu Sports coaches leading our sessions. Children should wear their P.E. kit into school on these days.
Forest School- Every Thursday our class will have an Outdoor Play (Forest School) session. Children should come into school in their kit including waterproofs and with wellies in a bag ready to change into. Mrs Crowley leads these sessions with the EYFS staff supporting learning.
Homework- As children settle into school they are sent reading books home. These will initially be wordless books, and then those that follow the sequence of our phonics teaching. As children move through our schemes, we will increase the amount sent home from 1 – 2 books depending on how well each child is doing. We listen to children once a week individually and swap their books on a Friday. In the summer term we will introduce guided reading to children, where they read the same text as their group and then answer comprehension questions about it.
-We will send out Phonic worksheets for children to complete over the weekend after they have been taught a new sound, there will normally be 2 sheets to complete.
-Children have access to Sumdog to reinforce some of their Maths learning.
