Our History topics this year will be: Benin, Medieval Monarchs and Changing Britain. Our Geography topics this year will be: Slums, Biomes and Energy and Sustainability. We also have some super Science topics this year include: Life Cycles and Living Things (including humans) and Space – which is always a firm favourite!
We try to fit in as much of our learning around our topics as possible, for example during our Benin topic we will also look into African Art and during our Geography topic on Biomes, we look at the flora and fauna within a particular biome and create it using watercolours.
In English, we will focus on space by looking at the text: Hidden Figures: The True Story of Four Black Women and the Space Race. Towards the end of the year, the children begin to take on positions of responsibility. They play an important role as dinner monitors, helping our youngest children with their lunches and teaching them a variety of games to play in the school playground.

Reading - we expect children to be reading regularly at home: the benefits, both academic and social, are huge! Children are welcome to borrow books from our class or school library. Our PE sessions are usually on Tuesday and Wednesday, however children will need to have their PE kits in school every day as this can change. Tuesday’s PE lesson will alternate between PE sessions and Outdoor Learning.
Homework is set every Friday and a spelling and times table test will occur on the following Friday. Please see our homework letter for further details.
We hope that all Year 5 children will enjoy the year, always striving to be the best they can be so that they are ready for their transition to Year 6 and the added responsibilities which come with this.
